  • Support Striking Workers with AFSCME Local 1110
    Posted On: Apr 12, 2026

Members of AFSCME Local 1110 are on strike for a Fair Contract with Fair Pay.

This local represents 350 members that do the hard, essential work of keeping campus buildings clean, preparing food for students, and keeping the grounds well-kept. Despite their dedication and hard work, Illinois State University fails to pay many workers a living wage while its president, Aondover Tarhule, rakes in a salary of $450,000 a year. After nearly a year of fighting for fair wages at the bargaining table, the university is refusing to negotiate at all, and the members have been left with no choice but to strike.

    University hiring strikebreakers

AFSCME Local 1110 was told ISU administration is contracting with private, for-profit companies for temporary replacement workers, commonly known as strikebreakers or scabs. The job postings are seeking temporary employees at the rate of $20 an hour — more than many striking workers are paid.
